Bodak Yellow the song that changed Cardi B
What a year Cardi B has had
In a two year time span, she's managed from being a random new cast member on Love & Hip Hop New York, to one of the biggest female stars in the world. Her humble beginnings helped shape her intriguing image known "to keep it real." So how did this proud exotic dancer end up on the cover of New York Magazine and Rolling Stone's "Hot Issue?"

Cardi B initially gained recognition on Love & Hip Hop by having an unique voice, that audiences were drawn to. Using her new found reality tv fame, Cardi B expanded her fan base by posting Instagram videos, embracing the stripper lifestyle, that she was once criticized for. Although Cardi stated that rap was her purpose for being on the reality show, many still didn't consider her as an actual rapper. With a couple of tv appearances, and a few features, she was able to land a deal with Atlantic Records. Shortly after signing to Atlantic records, her debut commercial single Bodak Yellow released. Overnight she became a worldwide phenomenon, everyone likes this song. This same sound that Kodak Black used to broaden his fan base, throughout the entire east coast with his song "No Flockin," Cardi B turned into a top billboard song. Although both songs have had a lot of success, Bodak Yellow turned into the summers anthem.
Cardi B is already receiving accolades, like "best female rapper." That's a stretch, however she has raise the bar for upcoming female rappers. CNN reported that Cardi B is the first solo female rapper to top the singles charts in over 20 years. Isn't it ironic that over 20 years ago the number 1 song was Lauryn Hill's Doo Wop (That Thing), a song about respecting yourself and others, is proceeded by a song that shares the opposite message. No shade intended, because they are both good songs, but I find it interesting to witness the progression of this alternative society.
During an interview with Hollywood Unlocked, Cardi B shares what inspired Bodak Yellow, and I could instantly hear the influences. Cardi B is the perfect for a mainstream trap girl appeal, because she also carries a comfortable sexy look. Meaning she has the sex appeal that everyone is accustomed to, so she'll fit in easily with the mainstream. As for upcoming acts, Cardi B is another example of the importance of social media and the impact it has in today's world. Congrats Cardi B you did it!
