First and foremost Kanye West had the most memorable acceptance speech at the show. Taking home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award presented by Taylor Swift, which in Kanye words "heavily promoted to increase MTV ratings." He spoke on many topics jumping from the millennium teachers of the generation, to the flaws in award shows, and ended with announcing that he is running for president in the year 2020. After the announcement #Kanye4President began trending on Twitter and Facebook.  Miley Cyrus hosted the show, delivering on both entertainment and fashion throughout the entire show, with funny commentary, multiple wardrobe changes, and staged clips. Nicki Minaj also had a few words for Miley responding to Miley's recent interview comments towards the rapper. Overall the show was entertaining with performances by The Weekend, Nicki Minaj, A$AP Rocky and 21 pilots, and Pharrell. However with questionable award winners and the overall dynamics of award sho

Lupe Fiasco - Pharaoh Height New Mixtape!

Lupe Fiasco - Pharaoh Height Political rapper Lupe Fiasco released early this morning a new mixtape titled Pharaoh Height . Of course with a name and cover art like that, conscious minds are forced to take a listen. Lupe is known for his wide range of sounds and thought provoking topics, so this comes as no surprise that this mixtape does that also. I enjoyed Pharaoh Height . The mixtape delivers in lyrical content that many would argue as true "hip hop." Normally I can't sit through an entire Lupe tape without turning it off or skipping the songs, because sometimes he can just do too much, in my opinion, but not on Pharaoh Height . Many artist mention political and mind control topics, but lack an explanation. Not Lupe, he's straight to the point and is in dept about the topics that he address on the tape, reminding audiences of the old Lupe, just with a newer flow. I like it, nice job Lupe!

Should Hip Hop Have Labels? Conscious VS Trap

Image
Conscious VS Trap After Vince Staple tweet about not wanting to be placed in the conscious rap label last Wednesday evening, Hip Hop heads voiced their opinion on the sub labels of hip hop. I am highly offended by the term conscious rap don't associate me with that. — Vince Staples (@vincestaples) August 12, 2015 This brings me to talk about the topic. Should hip hop have sub genres? Hip Hop was founded on the fun of mixing together music with rhymes and developed into storytelling, word play, political power etc... The culture of hip hop will always include the elements of  DJs to turn the tables, a microphone to spit the bars, graffiti to paint the images, and the infinite break dancing. Introduced in the late 70's were hip hop pioneer groups like, the Sugar Hill Gang, who were the first hip hop group to enter into mainstream media with the classic anthem "Rappers Delight," which expressed pure fun, funkadelic beats, rhymes, and basic flow.
