All about the 90s: VH1 Hip Hop Honors

Vh1 set the night off right wth Missy Elliot as the opening performance to the 2017 VH1 Hip Hop Honors. Known for oddly creative visuals, audiences were expecting a dynamic performance from Missy Elliot, and she did not disappoint. After being honored at last years ceremony and having such a dominant role in the late 90s, what better way to start the night. Hosted by Regina Hall, the award ceremony was filled with stars of the 90s and today. In celebration of the golden era of hip hop, fans and celebrities dressed in 90s clothing. Yes, that means flat tops, 4 finger rings, and joggers.

Rapper T.I introduced awards to 2 of most iconic moguls in hip hop, Master P and Jermaine Dupree, for their contribution to southern style hip hop. Without Master P, there would be no Cash Money, and New Orleans may not be a recognizable sound in hip hop. Jermaine Dupree introduced a plethora of classic southern acts, while broadcasting Atlanta culture which ultimately helped make Atlanta the number 1 source of hip hop today. Even if the west coast crowd weren't equipped to the original southern sound, Trick Daddy, Trina and Master P definitely got the audience hype. Classic 90s groups like Xscape set the stage on fire, and throughout the breaks you get a chance to see modern day "fly girls."

Top Black Sitcoms

Martin Lawrence's heartfelt speech captured the audience attention and hearts, while receiving his honor and contributions to 90s television. We've never seen this more mild side of Martin, being accustomed to the comedic humor, and banter towards Tichina Arnold. Martin is one of those timeless shows where you can watch countless reruns, and still laugh like it's new. Without shows like Martin, you couldn't use phrases like "I love the 90s."

The night ended honoring singer Mariah Carey, and like the diva she is, she definitely made a grand entrance and exit. Becoming one of hip hop's assets to get into the mainstream appeal, Mariah Carey changed pop and hip hop culture. Although Mase may have stumbled on his a few words, they both tore the stage a part, while exiting with such grace. Yes, the 2017 VH1 hip hop honors was an experience worth experiencing and I'm happy I got to see everyone up close.
