What's Your Favorite Will Smith Movie?
In honor
of Will Smith, who was awarded the Generation award at this year MTV Movie Awards.
I've concocted a list of my 5 favorite Will Smith movies.
Men in Black
The 1997 film stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones,
deriving from a Marvel comic book series. The Men in Black are a secret
government organization who manages "aliens" who live on earth. These
are the hidden people with secret identities, who make sure aliens are kept
hidden from humans, and do not endanger the planet. This thrilling science
fiction movie provides laughs for all audiences.
I am Legend
Presumably the last man on Earth is scientist Robert
Neville who’s played by Will Smith. Neville has created as vaccination to cure
cancer, which ultimately destroys mankind by turning the humans into mutant
zombies. However Neville is determined to reverse the virus, and is now
searching for others who are alive, while attempting to reverse the virus. This
is easily my favorite movie because of the story line and its presentation.
Will intertwines his personality with Neville, by having determination,
emotion, and even small amounts of comedy. I am Legend implies thought
provoking questions towards the current society, while creating emotional
attachment to Will's character. The film was released in December of 2007,
grossing over 70 million in box office sales. Critics and fans were not
disappointed in the film, although the slow pace of the film was criticized.
Ali, is one
of best biographical films to this date in my opinion. Will Smith depicts
champion boxer Muhammad Ali perfectly, from his attitude to his body movement.
Released in December of 2001 and directed by Michael Mann, Ali quickly became a
huge success with over 80 million dollars in box office sales. The film was
cast perfectly and Will Smith finally received awards and accolades as a
serious actor. Playing Muhammad Ali was one of Will's more unique characters
out of his filmography. Many fans who have seen Ali would agree that Smith
deserved to be at least nominated for an Oscar.
The
Pursuit of Happiness
Will
finally receives an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Chris Gardner, a
homeless entrepreneurial sales man who discovers his niche in stocks. Smith
gives a heartwarming performance in this biographical drama, which makes fans
appreciate their lives and the people inside of them. Released in December of
2006, The Pursuit of Happiness sold over 20 million during opening week and
overall more than 300 million in box office sales. This is by far Will's most
profitable film.
Independence
Day
The world
is once again in danger of alien invasion in this 1996 action thriller. However
unlike Men in Black there are no good aliens and Will doesn't have a partner,
he has an army. Independence Day is just a good movie to watch, the cast fits
the characters and the story line is simple, but displayed perfectly, enticed
with so much action.
